Utah Opera to serve up a varied menu in 2019-20 season
Anya Matanovič stars in Verdi’s “La Traviata,” which will open Utah Opera’s 2019-20 season October 12.
Utah Opera will offer four operas in the 2019-20 season, with two Italian favorites, one French rarity, and an acclaimed 21st-century American work.
Verdi’s La traviata will open the Salt Late City opera season October 12 running through October 20. Anya Matanovič stars as the doomed courtesan Violetta, with tenor Rafael Moras making his company debut as her lover Alfredo. Michael Chioldi returns as Germont, and Steven White conducts.
Silent Night by Kevin Puts and Mark Campbell will open the new year in January 2020. Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in music, the opera tells the true story of a 1914 Christmas truce between opposing soldiers during World War I. Craig Irvin and Daniel Belcher head the large cast with Robert Tweten conducting.
Rossini’s Barber of Seville follows in March with Michael Adams as the wily title character, Sarah Coit as Rosina and Matthew Grills as Count Almaviva. Gary Thor Wedow conducts.
Yet another famous courtesan is featured in Massenet’s Thaïs, which will close Utah Opera’s season in May. Nicole Heaston stars as the title Biblical temptress with Troy Cook as the conflicted, sometimes-holy man Athanaël. Kenneth Montgomery conducts.
