The Pioneer Theatre Company will be mounting a shortened, late-starting 2020-21 season in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

PTC will offer just a three-show season, opening February 19, 2021 with Something Rotten! The Broadway musical, which takes aim at Shakespeare, is rescheduled from the present season.

Also rescheduled is the world premiere of Ass, which follows on March 26.  Ellen Simon’s demurely titled comedy examines family relationships—though the central character, she says, is not based on her famous father, Neil Simon.

The abbreviated season will close with Legally Blonde, the Tony Award-nominated musical based on the movie of the same name, opening May 7.

“The pandemic has disrupted all our lives,” said Chris Massimine, whose debut season as managing director was disrupted by the coronavirus. “We are working closely with the State of Utah and the University as re-opening guidelines continue to evolve. With these challenging times comes the responsibility of balancing increased public safety and the well-being of staff and artists, alongside producing the first-class theatrical experiences to share and enjoy.”

PTC will offer a three-play package ranging from $94-$154, depending on seating and day of week. The company will continue to offer the Rush Pass but it will be limited to renewals until seating guidelines are clear. PTC will continue its “Under 35” package which offers a 50% discount for emerging professionals.

Current PTC season subscribers will receive renewal notices in May and June, and will have the opportunity to renew their subscription by July 17. To allow for social distancing guidelines that may be in effect in 2021, PTC will not be filling seat assignments immediately. The company will try to accommodate returning season patrons with existing seats, but will also preserve those choices for the following season.

Previous season subscribers will receive accommodations for the postponed productions of this season. New subscriber orders will be filled in the order in which they are received.
